Summary:
The Museum Archivist is responsible for the management, preservation, and organization of museum archival collections. This role requires expertise in library and information science, as well as a deep understanding of archival principles and practices. The Museum Archivist will play a critical role in ensuring the proper documentation, cataloging, and accessibility of museum artifacts and historical records.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement archival policies and procedures to ensure the proper handling, preservation, and storage of museum artifacts, manuscripts, photographs, and other historical materials.
2. Create and maintain detailed records, inventories, and finding aids to facilitate efficient retrieval and research access to the museum's archival collections.
3. Conduct thorough assessments of incoming acquisitions, donations, or loans to determine their historical value and relevance to the museum's collection.
4. Collaborate with museum staff and external stakeholders to identify, appraise, and prioritize archival materials for acquisition, preservation, and digitization.
5. Organize, arrange, and describe archival collections using appropriate archival standards, metadata schemas, and classification systems.
6. Perform preservation activities, including cleaning, repairing, and digitizing fragile or deteriorating materials, in accordance with best practices and ethical guidelines.
7. Conduct research and provide expert guidance on archival matters to museum staff, scholars, researchers, and the general public.
8. Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in archival practices, and recommend innovative approaches to enhance the museum's archival operations.
9. Collaborate with the museum's educational programs to develop and deliver workshops, training sessions, and outreach activities related to archival management and research.
10. Supervise and train a team of archival assistants, interns, or volunteers, ensuring their adherence to archival standards and procedures.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field. Master's degree in Library and Information Science with a specialization in Archives strongly preferred.
2. Minimum of 3 years of professional experience working with archival collections, preferably in a museum or cultural heritage institution.
3. Strong knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices, including familiarity with DACS, EAD, and other relevant archival standards and metadata schemas.
4. Proficient in archival processing techniques, including arrangement, description, preservation, and access methods.
5. Demonstrated experience in the use of archival collection management systems and databases for cataloging and retrieval purposes.
6. Familiarity with preservation techniques and best practices for handling and digitizing various types of historical materials.
7. Excellent research and analytical skills with the ability to conduct in-depth research and provide accurate and relevant information.
8. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate records and ensure the integrity of archival collections.
9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders, including museum staff, researchers, and the public.
10. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
